April 20--A pair of one-run losses to the University of Saint Mary puts the Bethel College softball team's hopes of reaching the post-season in jeopardy.
Bethel lost both games 8-7. The second game was decided in eight innings.
Bethel falls to 15-20, 6-12 in KCAC play. With four games remaining, the Threshers drop to ninth place in the conference, one game behind Bethany. The top eight teams advance to the KCAC post-season tournament.
Saint Mary improves to 15-22-1, 8-5 in KCAC play.
In the first game, Bethel fell behind 6-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. Bethel scored in the third inning on a two-run Katie Schrag single. The Spires came back in the top of the fourth inning on solo home runs for Hannah Gradillias and Nicole DeSimone.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Michelle Schrag hit an RBI single, scoring on an error. Leisle Hoffman hit a two-run triple.
Jeni Reichenberger hit a solo home run for Bethel with one out. Rylie Scudder followed with a double, but a double play ended the rally and the game.
Carrie Lee pitched 4 1-3 innings for the win, striking out three. Abagail Torres finished the game, striking out three. Madison McDowell took the loss, striking out three. Scudder finished the game, striking out three.
DeSimone finished three for four hitting with an RBI. Samantha Torres finished two for four with two RBIs. Gradillas finished two for two with three RBIs. Alana Renshaw went two for three.
Katie Schrag finished two for three with two RBIs. Hoffman and McDowell each went two for four.
In the second game, Bethel scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kiera Broehl hit an RBI double. Krystin McKelpin hit a two-run double.
Saint Mary came back with four runs in the top of the second. Tycee Coplan hit a two-run triple. Gradillas and Alana Renshaw each hit an RBI single. Samantha Torres added an RBI double in the top of the third. Kayla Hackney hit an RBI single in the top of the fourth. Two errors in the sixth led to another Spire run.
Bethel got back in the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Reichenberger hit an RBI double, followed by a McKelpin with an RBI single. Trista Rich added an RBI single.
In the bottom of the seventh, Reichenberger hit an RBI single with two outs. A ground out left the winning run stranded at third.
Abagail Gonzales hit a sacrifice fly to score a run in the top of the eighth. With a runner at third and one out in the bottom of the eighth, a pair of strikeouts ended the game.
Lee went seven innings for the win, striking out 11. Sydney Bollinger took the loss for Bethel. Scudder struck out four in six innings.
Renshaw finished three for four hitting. Gradillas finished three for five. Kayla Hackney, Samantha Torres and Kaila Trowbridge each had two hits.
Reichenberger went three for four hitting for Bethel with two RBIs. McKelpin finished two for four with three RBIs.
Bethel plays Sterling at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sterling.
